Okay, but What is it?

Dating back to the 1st century encaustic had been used to archive artifacts, documents and photographs. An all organic medium consisting of purified beeswax and damar resin (hardened tree sap) mixed in a ratio that allows for the resin to add the hardening element to the wax and a beautiful natural gloss finish to the work. Encaustic is naturally archival so no need to frame behind glass.

The Process (AKA art Meditation)

Unlike any other art medium, Encaustic goes from warm to cold not wet to dry. It is applied in a molten state and then fused with heat to the substrate beneath, layer upon layer is applied, fusing between each layer, adding oil based pigments, pan pastels, oil pastels, mixed media elements etc. to create depth and interest between each layer. Scraping back in areas to reveal the layer lurking beneath, revealing the story, adding texture and interest creates a unique and one of a kind work. A very forgiving and therapeutic medium. A finished piece can be reworked at any time by reheating the panel. Pretty cool right?

The After Care (Not much to it, really)

It is advised, as with any fine art piece that Encaustic not be hung in direct sunlight or stored in extreme temperatures. Room temperatures are perfect. Blooming (a hazy appearance) may occur for the first year of its' life as a naturally occurring process within the wax, when you notice this give a soft rub to the all over surface with a clean microfibre cloth to bring back its lustre. This care given also provides a moment to stay connected to your art piece, another unique perk of owning Encaustic Art.
