What is IT?
Encaustic is a blend of purified beeswax and hardened tree sap, known as damar resin. Mixed and melted down in a ratio that allows for the resin to add the hardening element to the wax and gives the beautiful glow to the finished work.
Is IT a new trend?
Not a trend. Dating from the 1st century, encaustic was used to preserve artifacts, documents, and later, photographs. A naturally archival medium that does not need to be put behind glass.
What is the procesS?
Unlike any other medium, encaustic goes from warm to cool not wet to dry. Applied molten in thin layers and fused with heat between each layer, adding oil pigment, drawing oils, pan pastels. Scraping and carving into the wax to reveal what is lurking beneath, creating texture and a narrative for the piece.
caring for art
Encaustic art should not be hung in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures. Normal indoor room temperatures are fine. A naturally archival medium that does not need to be put behind glass.
A hazy “bloom” can appear during the first year of its’ life. Gently rub the surface with a clean microfibre cloth to restore its shine. This simple care also lets you reconnect with the piece.
